BBC News – Facebook smartphone to be ‘released next year’

There is a superb example of tautology in the title of this article. Can you identify it ? I also particularly admire the total nonesense in this sentence:

“The App Center currently offers links to Facebook-enabled apps within Apple’s iOS and Google Android stores but developers will soon be able to write apps to be placed exclusively in Facebook’s store.”

Note the silent “cr” in the word “app” !

BBC News – Beijing sets ‘two flies only’ public toilet guidelines

Oh no ! If I ever go to China I shall have to have all of my trousers especially adapted. Which reminds me: which two French cities are like a badly made pair of trousers ?

(Answer: Toulon & Toulouse !)

Here is an extract I came across recently and used in an advanced class. It puzzled them for ages trying to work out all of the direct & indirect object pronouns never mind the verb phrases. For experts & geeks only !!
“Tre gessetti colorati”
This extract is taken from a short story by Astrid Mazzola published in the series Subway-Letteratura. The story is about the effect a young street artist has on an eight year old passer-by on his way to school.

“Vidi che nei suoi occhi color ombra del baobab c’era un dolore piccolo piccolo, ma non avevo parole per domandarle da dove venisse. Se le avessi avute avrei potuto chiederle di disegnarlo, quel piccolo dolore segreto.”

BBC News – Italian university switches to English

“These are the days of the curriculum vitae rather than the dolce vita.”

This is an excellent article and a brave move from the Italians. Now they need to change their archaic recruitment policies whereby “who you know” counts for more than “what you know”. Nepotism is still rife in academia and local government unfortunately.

As Tom Jones used to say, “the green, green grass of home is always greener”, or words to that effect.
